Παρακαλώ όπως και διαβαστεί από τους εκλεκτούς samurai της επαρχίας. Beiden Province

History:

Beiden province used to be the most important province of the Scorpion clan up to the end of the Spirit Wars. The Beiden pass, the only passage through the Spine of the World Mountains wide and safe enough for an army to cross, guaranteed the Scorpion with huge amount of tax tariffs and political leverage. The numerous battles that took place at either side of the pass during the turbulent  years of the Clan Wars offered the Clan of Secrets with war compensations after their reinstatement as a major clan.

The provincial Daimyos of Beiden were members of the Tobugama family, vassals of the Yogo. The Tobugama family for 650 years guided the trade of the region and for that purpose they built a huge and extravagant mansion complex, the Yogo Estates,  in order to accommodate the delegations and VIP of the Rokugan high strata that came to the Province for business.

The most famous battles that took place in the province were the defense of Toturi ronin army against the advance of Hida Kisada that stalled the Bear's advance to the capital, the battle of Mantis - Crane which saved the Scorpion lands from Mantis occupation and the battle that signaled the end of the province growth among Toturi and Hantei XVI armies.

The province lost its importance at the climax of the last battle during the Spirit Wars, when the shugenja of the Toturi mortal army collapsed the mountain cliffs of the pass, destroying a large part of  the spirit army and ensuring the mortals victory. It was a sacrifice that the Scorpion army gladly gave to the Emperor although they knew that they condemned Beiden into oblivion.

Location:

Beiden province is located at the center of the Scorpion lands and it is relatively small, only two days walk are needed for someone to traverse it. At the east, the Spine of the World Mtn separate it from the Ikoma's holdings, at the south and the west it borders the Bayushi provinces of Chuuou, Nezuban and Kunizakai respectively.

Roads and transportation:

The "Lonesome path" is a desolate road that connects Yogo Shiro and Nihai tower. It winds through swamps and treacherous cliffs that makes every trip perilous and ensures that few will use the province as a mean to the Yogo Shiro. A part of the imperial road, the Koku Road, connects the town of Kagoke with Kyuden Bayushi and bears the majority of the trade. It is constantly guarded against bandits and ronin.

In order to support the large amount of caravans that used to pass when the Pass was opened, numerous provincial roads were built making it one of Rokugan's best traversed provinces. Alas, the roads are in bad shape and need urgent repairs. The province lacks a major water route as its rivers are small and usually overflown by the Mtn heavy rains.

Weather:

The proximity of the mountains offer comfort during the summers and protection during spring's destructive rains. Autumn winds are notorious through the empire for their ferocity and unpredictability. The peasants frequently offer chimenage to the kami of the mountain and to the Fortune of Kaze - No - Kami, the capricious Fortune of the wind for protection. The damage that the winds inflict during autumn is estimated at 1100 kokku.

Productivity/Imports/Exports:

The province has an annual production of 5500-8000 kokku, making it the second most productive province of the Scorpion clan. Although its high productivity, the surplus rice ends in Bayushi's storage at Kyuden Bayushi as it is an established policy of the Scorpion clan to store any extra production for times of need.

It mainly imports are porcelain and ceramics from the Lion clan, leather and iron works from the Unicorn, luxuries such as diamonds and emerald from Dragon, iron, weapons and jade from the Crab, spices and exotics from the Mantis.

Beiden's exports are wood, tin, copper, silk, cotton textiles, paper, tea and in the illicit markets, red spider poison and secrets.

Military:

After the fall of the Pass the legions that where stationed in Beiden have withdrawn either to the Crab borders in the south or to the newly discovered passage of Seikitsu in the Unicorn border. The province relies to its own militia and approximately 400 vassal samurai to guard the trade routes and the small passages of the mountains. The only viable pass through the mountains, Shamate pass, is guarded by a mixed Bayushi/Lion regiment of 80 men.

Shrines and Temples:

The province's main Shrine is dedicated to Kaze - No - Kami, the Fortune of Wind and lies near the town of Kagoke. The Shrine, although small, is of tremendous spiritual importance to the populace. The next important shrine is dedicated to the Kami of the Mountain and it is preserved by a small group of monks. It is situated atop a plateau at an altitude of 4500m. Even daring to climb there, is considered a chimenage of itself to the Kami. Many peasants regard  the Kami as a God and include it in their daily prayers. Recently a monastery was built inside Shiro Soyokaze, administered by the monastic order of the Temple of the Thousand Fortunes.

Major Holdings:

The Kagoke town serves as the face of the Yogo family to the rest of the Clan and Rokugan. The Yogo Estates that are located at its outskirts used to offer luxurious accommodations to 100 officers and diplomats from all over the Empire during their peak. The town has 1000  souls and is the center of the province's trade. Kagoke offers 1/3 of province's rice production and it is famous for its silk quality.

The Beiden village is only a shadow of its former self. It is located at the entrance of the old Pass at an altitude of 900m. After the destruction of the Pass, it's inhabitants abandoned it and moved to more comfortable environments. Beiden would have become a ghost town if not for the illicit trade of opium that takes place through there. Beiden has  huge barrack's facilities able to accommodate two imperial size legions (2500 troops). These facilities are now deserted.

Shiro Soyokaze (Castle of the Silent Breeze) is the only Shiro of the Province and seat of its Daimyo. A small nearby village offers its services and products to the Shiro's nobles and court. Soyokaze location is strangely  protected by the wrath of the winds, as its name implies, and boasts for its magnificent cherry fields and yards. Recently Shiro Soyokaze offered a portion of its inner yard to the monastic order of the Thousand Fortunes who quickly established a small monastery.

Dokugumo village is an unremarkable place at the foothills of the Mountains and surrounded by swamps. But as all things Scorpion there is more than it implies there. Dokugumo has the largest population of red spiders, a small spider whose poison is reputed to be among the 3 deadliest poisons of Rokugan. The people of Dokugumo are perfectly accustomed in living with the little critters and is considered bad luck to kill one of them. The spiders can be found everywhere even on the peasants homes and bodies. The poison that is produced is traded for high prices to the Shosuro family as well as a remedy for various illnesses across the Empire.
